Astanga Hridayam



This was written by Acharya Vagabhatta who probably lived in the 4 th century A.D. This text contains collections of selected major  topics from both Caraka and Sushruta Samhitas. It is in brose form and has 6 sections and 120 chapters.
 From 500 A.D. to 1900 A.D. 16 Nighantus or supplementary texts on Ayurveda were compiled, by adding detaies of new medicines, therapies -  Sarangdhara Samhita, Madhavnidan, Kashyappa Samhita are a few of such treatises.

 The texts on Ayurveda are divided into two major categories; – Brihat trayi and Laghutrai. Brihatrayi includes Caraka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. Laghutrai indudes Sarangadhara Samhita, Bhava Prakash and Madhavridan.
