The Fallopian tubes, also called as oviducts, uterine tubes or salpinges are a pair of thin tubes lined with ciliated epithelia, leading to the ovaries and the uterus in females.
Anatomy
In a woman the Fallopian tubes carry the egg from the ovary to the uterus. The Fallopian tube comprises of three parts a lateral segment near the ovary that represents the major portion of the tube, the narrower part of the tube that links to the uterus and the part that transverses into the uterine musculature. The base of the Fallopian tube is the point where the tubal canal meets the peritoneal cavity, while the uterine opening is the entrance in the uterine cavity.
Tthe Fallopian tubes are made up of two types of cells. The simple columnar epithelium amd the Ciliated cells predominantly throughout the tubes. The female hormone estrogen increases the production of cilia on these cells. In between the ciliated cells are peg cells, which produce the tubular fluid. This fluid contains nutrients for spermatozoa, oocytes, and zygotes. This fluid secretion promote help the sperm by removing glycoproteins and other molecules from the plasma membrane of the sperm, thereby promoting fusion and zygote formation. The female hormones Progesterone and Estrogen increase the number of peg cells and increases the secretory activity respectively.
Functions
When an egg is developing in an ovary, the egg is encapsulated in a sac known as an ovarian follicle. On maturity of the egg, the follicle and the ovary’s wall rupture, allowing the egg to escape. The egg travels through the fallopian tube where the sperms are met and fertilization takes place. The fertilized egg is now known as a zygote, travels towards the uterus aided by activity of tubal cilia and activity of the tubal muscle. After about four or five days the zygote enters the uterine cavity and implants itself.
Sometimes the embryo implants into the Fallopian tube instead of the uterus, creating an ectopic pregnancy or tubal pregnancy.
Testing
A full testing of tubal functions is not possible. Testing of tubal patency is important as tubal obstruction is a major cause of infertility in woman. A hysterosalpingogram will prove that the tubes are open. Tubal insufflation is a standard procedure for testing patency. During surgery the condition of the tubes may be inspected with a methylene blue dye injection in the uterus.
Diseases of the Fallopian tube
The most common diseases of the Fallopian tubes are:
1. Fallopian tube Block
Pelvic inflammatory disease can affect the fallopian tubes. This might cause a Fallopian tube obstruction or Fallopian tube Block.
2. Fallopian tube cancer
Fallopian tube cancer is a rare problem that can arise from the epithelial lining of the Fallopian tubes. This Fallopian tube cancer is sometimes mistaken as ovarian cancer.
Remedy
The common remedy for fallopian tube block is surgery only. But in some cases where continuous cough, cold and instances of Tuberculosis is also responsible for the blockage, anti tubercular drugs are also administered with minimal results. The alternative to drugs in the treatment of fallopian tube block in allopathy is surgery only.
The surgical removal of a Fallopian tube is called a salpingectomy. To remove both sides is a bilateral salpingectomy. An operation that combines the removal of a Fallopian tube with removal of at least one ovary is a salpingo-oophorectomy. An operation to restore a fallopian tube obstruction is called a tuboplasty.
Ayurveda Treatment
In Ayurveda there are many remedies available for the treatment of the uterus ovary and even fallopian tubes. The advantages of Ayurveda are that it not only improves the condition, but also provides a life time solution for infertility.
Ayurveda offers a variety of treatments for female disorders. The ayurveda treatments available for the female disorders vary from drugs acting on the ovary to the uterus. Especialy the drugs that act on the uterus, improve the elasticity of the uterus wall and increase the flexibility of the Uterine muscles. The ayurveda drugs act like wise on the fallopian tubes and increase the elasticity of the tubes and flush out the secretions that block the fallopian tubes.
The ayurveda drugs act directly on the fallopian tubes and they not only remove the blockage but also provide resistance to the fallopian tubes and afford them the ability to further avoid blockages in the near future. This advantage of ayurveda gives a wonderful hope for the infertile couples.

Joint Aches

There are 230 movable and semi-movable joints in our body.

Our bones are made up of calcium – calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate.

Our bones are reserves of calcium. In times of need, calcium can be given to the body.

Our muscle bone skeletal system provides form, stability and movement to the body.

Bones serve as rigid structures to the body and as shield to protect delicate internal organs.

Movable joints are, shoulder joints, Hip joint, Ankle joint. Immovable joint is skull

Body joints are the points at which two or more bones are connected.

Cartilage is a strong, dense tissue that connects the bone joints. Any disease involving the Synovial Membranes or causing degeneration of Cartilage may cause Arthritis.

Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most pervasive and common diseases in the world.

It is a general term used to indicate any rheumatic disorder that cause pain, stiffness and swelling of the joints

Medically, Arthritis is inflammation, characterized by pain, stiffness & swelling of one or more joints and connective tissues.

Simply Arthritis is a painful stiff joint

Arthritis also affects cartilage, muscles, tendons, ligaments etc.

About 1 in every 4 adult above 65 years of age suffers from Arthritis. It affects women (especially after menopause) more than men.

Osteo – arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and Gout are the types of Arthritis.

Osteo – arthritis is a chronic disease of the joint cartilage and surrounding tissues that is characterized by pain, stiffness and loss of function

Osteo – arthritis occurs in weight bearing joints e.g. – knees and ankle joints

Symptoms are stiffness, moderate to severe pain, difficulty in moving the joints, Redness and warmth in the joints and Back pain.

Osteo – arthritis affects the hands and joints of the finger, base of thumb, neck, lower back, big toes, hips and knees.

It often affects spine. Back ache is common.

Osteo – arthritis is described as “Sandhi Vatha” in Ayurveda which believes that one of the three doshas, “Kapha” resides in joints. When ‘vatha’ increases ‘Kapha’ decreases and the joint looses its lubricating oil, resulting in wear and tear of joints.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: is an inflammatory arthritis in which smaller joints, including those of hands and feet are inflamed, resulting in pain and often the destruction of joints

RA differs from many other forms of Arthritis because it is widespread in nature, affecting the whole body, not just the joints.

It affects women 2 to 3 times more than men.

It is called “Amavatha” in Ayurveda.

It is caused probably by faulty immune system, genetic predisposition etc.

Symptoms are stiff and painful small joints of fingers, toes, wrists, hand, feet, elbows etc, light fever, tiredness, Weakness, Morning stiffness, Muscle weakness, Difficulty in movement.

Affected joints enlarge, swell and may freeze in one position – closed or open

Gout is a painful type of arthritis

It is called “Vatharaktha” in Ayurveda.

It is a disorder that results from deposits of sodium urate crystals, which accumulate in the joints because of high blood levels of uric acid leading to attacks of painful joint inflammation

Gout could be very painful when its attack is acute

Apart from medication, diet that increases uric acid in the body need to be avoided.

The causes of Arthritic diseases

Age

Infection

Abnormality of cells that synthesize cartilage and water retention in cartilage

Obesity

Faulty life style and food habits.

Ankylosing Spondylites

This is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the joints between the vertebrae of the spine and joints between the spine & pelvis.

This disease is 3 times more common in men than in women

Cause not known but may run in families

It occurs in twenties and rarely after age 40.

The symptoms are: – low back pain, stiffness, subgluteal pain, Early morning stiffness etc.

Cervical Spondylosis

This is a disorder in which the discs and vertebrae in the neck degenerate putting pressure on the spinal cord in the neck.

Cervical spondylosis usually affects middle – aged and older people.

Causes could be lack of exercise, faulty posture, injury, age related wear & tear of the joints, faulty support to the neck while sleeping (too many pillows), degenerative changes in the spine (overgrowth of spine, compressing spinal cord)

Symptoms are Pain in the posterior neck often radiating to the arms, compression of spinal cord causing change in walking (leg movements become jerky and walking between unsteady) weakness in the extremities, Numbness & tingling sensation in the hands or feet.

Continuous or Progressive neck pain is the key symptom

Lumbar Spondylosis

This is a rheumatic condition that affects the muscles of the lower part of the back (lumbar region)

Causes are inadequate support while sitting, Trauma injury to spine, lifting heavy loads, infections, Psychological factors; driving vehicles, obesity, sedentary life, osteoarthritis etc.

Symptoms are pain in the lumbosacral region, aggravated pain by back movements, sitting, standing lifting and bending.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which a progressive decrease in the density of bones weaken the bones, making fractures likely.

In women bone density progressively increases until the age of thirty, when the bones are at their strongest. After that, the bone density gradually decreases. The decrease accelerates after menopause

Causes could be, hereditary. In sufficient calcium in the diet, sedentary lifestyle, Thin build, Use of cortico – steroids or thyroid hormones, Early menopause – alcohol and tobacco.

Symptoms: Progressive low bone density may cause bones to collapse and deformities. Vertebrae are more prone to fracture in osteo – porosis causing back pain.

Even minor strain or fall may cause fractures.

Management of Arthritis

Mental and physical rest in bed necessary during acute febrile stage.

Anemia should be corrected.

Stress and strain should be reduced.

Dampness and draught (i.e. breeze produced by wind or fan) should be avoided.

Infection must be treated.

Repeated medical check – up is required to avoid negative effects of medication.

You must feed ‘colostrum’ to your baby as it is rich in many nutrients and prevents infections.

Breast milk is safe, a complete and well balanced food. It provides all the required nutrients needed by the baby in the first few months of its birth. It keeps away infections.

It is readily available and needs no cooking or mixing.

It is economical; no need to worry about how much to feed; Does not need the strain in preparing feeding bottle and breast milk substitutes.

It establishes the “emotional bond” with the mother.

Usually breast feeding, averts another pregnancy, during the lactation period. This must not be taken as 100% correct. Young mothers better be realistic and avoid another conception by resorting to other contraceptive measures. Breast – feeding mothers tend to start meanstruating usually after 10 – 12 weeks of delivery.

Breast feeding mothers should keep their breasts and nipples clean. After feeding wipe breasts with clean cloth.

Breast feed the baby whenever he cries. Feeding on demand is better than following a time schedule of once in every 3 – 4 hours. Mothers should also feed intants at night on demand.

It is important to learn how to position the baby during feeding.

As long as a mother is breast feeding, she needs extra nourishment, especially, calcium. Dairy products, provide calcium. It the mother can not tolerate dairy products, Nuts and green leafy vegetables may be taken.

Sweating disorders

Man is a warm blooded Animal. He has a built in thermostat in his body that maintains his body temperature with in a narrow range (1 or 2 degrees of 98.6degree F) despite fluctuations in external temperatures.

Sweating is the process by which our body maintains its internal temperature. It helps to keep the body cool. People sweat more when it is more warm. They also sweat more when they are nervous, under stress or exercising. Sweat glands produce moisture that cools the skin as it evaporates. Humidity slows down (the presence of moisture in the air) and decreases the effectiveness of sweating. Therfore we are uncomfortable in sultry, hot and humid weather, especially in coastal areas. Common locations of sweat in the body are – under arms, on the feet and on the palms of the hands. Sweating is more in women at Menopause.

Sweat is produced by sweat glands in the skin and carried to the skins surface by ducts. It composes mostly of water. It also contains salt (mostly sodium chloride) and other chemicals (Urea etc). When a person sweats a lot the lost water and salt must be replaced. While sweating helps in controlling body temperature, it is also a means of excreting nitrogenous waste.

Sweat gland is a simple, coiled tubular exocrine gland that lies in the dermis of the skin. A long dult carries its secretion (sweat) to the surface of the skin. sweat glands occur over most of the surface of the body. They are particularly abundant in the arm pits, on the soles of the feet, palms of the hands and on the forehead.

A person is born with about two to four million sweat glands. The glands start to become fully active during puberty. Though women have more sweat glands than men, men’s glands are more active.

Excessive sweating (Hyperhidrosis)

It is natural to sweat more when the external atmosphere is hot and humid or when a person has fever. But some people sweat profusely and constuntly without these circumstances. This kind of chronic, severe wetness make the affected area wrinkled, cracked and white. Sometimes the area becomes red and inflamed. The area may emit foul odour. If the sweating is accompanied by fever, weight loss, chest pain, shortness of breadth or a rapid heart beat, get to a doctor.

Causes

Hyperthyroidism, Heart disease, Menopause, Parkinsons disease, Luncy disease, acromegaly

Low level of sugar in the blood

Alcohol, caffeine

Certain drugs

Emotional feelings, stress, Tension.

Home remedies

Wash face and body

Change clothes and bed sheet

Drink plenty of water

Use mild commercial anti perspriants

Facial Hyperhidrosis: In this condition, sweat pours down the forehead.

Palamar Hyperhidrosis: In this condition profuse sweating occurs in the palms of the hands.

Axillary Hyperhidrosis: This refers to sweating, less frequently, that occurs in the thighs and or Trunk.

Night Sweats: Profuse sweating in the night causing sleep disturbances: Causes could be Menopause or Andropause. HIV, T.B., Diabetes Insipidous, sleep apnea, Alcohol, certain drugs and spicy food.

Treatment:

Commercial anti – perspirants can control sweating to some degree. Solution of Aluminium chloride or methenamine may help. Deodorants do not prevent sweating but are useful in reducing body odour

For those with the unpleasant problem of odour, cleansing the body twice a day with soap and water usually removes the bacteria and the yeast, that cause the odour.

Take warm or cold showers.

Herbes used for treating

Sage (salvia officinalis): About 20 sage leaves should be added to two cups of water and brought to boil and kept in simmer for 5 minutes. Strain and drink every evening.

Tea made of lemon balm, fennel seeds and peppermint can be taken at bedtime.

Take 50 mg of wheat grass with water, daily on empty stomach. It reduces body odour.

Excessive sweating, especially in the palms, could be embrrasing. It affects your working.

The tests required for diagnosing excessive sweating are

1. Starch iodine test and

2. Paper test.

Absence of sweating

The abnormal absence of sweating in response to heat is called Anhidrosis. This could be harmful because without sweating, heat is not properly released from the body.

Causes

Congenital disorders

Certain drugs

Skin diseases that block sweat glands.

Neurological disorders

Burns

dehydration.

Excessive sweating could be quite distressing and causes embarrasment. Ayurvedic medicines will help in treatment of these condition, without side effects.

Skin Care in Winter

Many women think that the scorching sun in the summer is more harmful to the skin than the cold of the winter. Winter is quality harmful to the skin. The chilly winds of the winter could your skin of moisture and makr it too dry.

Normal skin has sufficient water content to maintain its soft texture. To avoid water loss, the outer layer contains oil. If this oil is depleted, the skin becomes dry and rough Dry skin is medically called “xerosis”. It includes not only dryness in the skin, but other abnormal dryness of conjunctiva or the mucous membranes.

Common causes of xerosis are:-

Cold weather

Bathing frequently – using hot water, harsh soap, drying the skin Vigourously rubbing with a rough towel – Bathing removes the surface oil of your skin.

UV rays become stronger in winter and damage the skin .

Sauna baths

Use of some antiperspirants, perfumes, deodrants, detergents etc.

Age – As you age, your oil glands decrease production of the lubricant oil “sebum” and also the age causes slow down in the action of sweat glands.

Dry skin causes the skin to crack, peel and inflamed. There may be itching, scaling, chapping etc. Rubbing or scratching dry skin aggravates the problem and lead to infection and scarring. Dry skin is most common in arms, thighs, lower legs and hips. Because of the dryness, skin cell renewal slows down. Dead, flaky skin alls accumulate causing dry patches and dullness of the skin tone. Dryness causes wrinkles on your face.

Remedies

Simple dry skin is easily treated just by keeping the skin moist. The drier the skin moist. The drier the skin, heavier is the application of moisturisers. Moisturizers resotore oil and water to the skin. The best time to apply these, is immediately after the bath. You can use the moisturizers, atleaset 3 times a day, on your face. Also cover your whole body, paying special attention to your arms, knees and ellows, Moisturizers contain, normally, glycerine, petroleum jelly, mineral oil and are available as creams or lotions. Stronger moisturizers contain urea, lactic acid and glycolic acid. But why go for all these, when you have excellent Ayurvedic herbal moisturizers available on a wide reange?

Do not take bath frequently. Reduce the time taken for bashing. Apply vitamin E – oil on your face and other parts of the skin, if you are taking a steam bath. Do not use hot water. Luke warm or tepid water is good enough. Use a gentle soap. For the face avoid soap and use special moisturizers. Indian women have a habit of taking oil baths atleast once a week. In winter, apply oil (olive / gingelly / sesame) and massage all over the body, if possible laily. Wait for 30 mimutes or 1 how then take bath. When taking oil bath with an oil alone can make your skin supple and satimy, think of the benefits if the ordinary oil is fortified with herbs! Hence try fortified Ayurvedic herbal oils.

If you think that sun – protection is required only is summer, think again. Even in winter you need sun – prosection. Exposure to sun, in winter or summer is the single most important factor is premature ageing of the skin. Therefore use sun goggles, sun screen lotions (preferably herbal) to ward of sun and U.V. rays.

Some Ayurvedic doctors suggest that oatmeal and dry milk powder (1/2 cup each) can be added to your bath – water.

If you use sweater, do not wear it next to the skin. Wear a cotton inner garment, immediately next to your skin, then wear the sweater.

There are several home remedies for dry skin. The basic ingredients are bananas, honey, poppy seeds etc. The simplest is massaging the face with 2 tablespoons of milk. The best way is to forget home remedies and use ready made Ayurvedic lotions, creams, emollients, plenty of which are available in the market.

Winter causes dry lips and ugly “cracks” on the lips. Massaging the lips with coconut oil mixed with glycerine and rose water, two or three times a day, may help. Ready made lip – moisturizers are available.

A little more in take of fat (Ghee) than normal is preferable in winter. In winter loss of oil & moisture is very high

Herbs used in Ayurveda

Pongamia Glabra – For skin diseases, reduces itching

Lawsonia Intermis – Keeps the body cool

Terminal balerica – Astringent, tonic, used in skin diseases. Prevent ageing

Thespesia Populnea – tonic, cures skin diseases, astringent

Centella asiatica – Good for skin diseases, improves memory

Cannarium Strictum – For skin diseases with gingelly oil in rheumatic pain

Coccinia Indica – Improve Skin and scalp tone.

Generic medicines

Nimpathikuada Churanam, Kunkumadhi Lebum etc.
